Located on the coast of Girona, Spain, Empuriabrava is the largest residential marina in the world and the sun shines for approximately 300 days a year. The town is completely surrounded by mountains and beautiful coastline with a beautiful wide sandy beach, perfect for sunbathers and those who like all kind of water sports.
Over the last few decades the area has developed from a small town to a bustling tourist community. With a range of activities available from skydiving (the town is one of the three best skydiving spots of the world) to learning how to sail, Empuriabrava is a great destination for a unique holiday.
Things to do in Empuriabrava
Empuriabrava is a coastal town that is built around a winding canal system. The majority of residences have a mooring at the bottom of their garden, and navigating around the 24km of canals is a unique and enjoyable experience that you are unable to replicate almost anywhere else in the world. Canal tours are readily available, with some stopping for a long lunch at the marina waterfront half way through.
The town itself has two six kilometre beaches, many shops, and a good selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. An open air market is also held on the seafront every Saturday morning, where you can pick up some high quality fruit and vegetables to cook with in your self-catering accommodation. If you fancy something a little more adventurous, tennis, golf, scuba diving and skydiving are all popular activities in Empuriabrava, and you can even learn to sail a boat, with a number of sailing schools in the area. Families with children may like to spent a day trip for visiting the well known "Port Aventura theme park" that awaits you at just abour a two hours drive away.
If you fancy getting away from it all, you can head to the Parc Naturel Del’s Aiquamolls – a nearby nature area that is excellent for walking and cycling. Here you can enjoy a picnic, take in the sea views, visit the bird sanctuary, and bird watch from designated observation points.
Natural scenery
Almost a third of the terrain in the Costa Brava is marked as a specially protected area. This means that there’s almost no end of walking and biking trails through unblemished natural landscapes. Alongside the coast are beautiful mountain ranges like the Montgrí Massif, noted for their wild and rocky appearance. If you’re a diver then head for Cap de Creus, east of Roses, and home to a large marine reserve.
Culture and heritage
There are more than 70 museums across the Costa Brava, covering fields as varied as cinema, archaeology, traditional farming, toys and art. The town of Figueres is closely linked with 20th Century surrealist Dalí, and there’s a large collection of his work is here, housed in a museum designed by the artist himself. Meanwhile if you’re a history buff you can find a wealth historical fragments in Costa Brava dating back as far as the ancient Greeks.
Weather in Empuriabrava
On holiday at self-catering accommodation in Empuriabrava you will be in a region with a mild Mediterranean climate. Summer highs can be tempered slightly by winds from the Pyrenees, but the period from May to October is hot when you compare the Costa Brava to places in northern and central Europe.
Hot and humid summers reach around 30°C on most days - though due to its positioning Empuriabrava receives a cooling sea breeze - and rain is scarce until autumn arrives. Winters are moderate, with temperatures average between 10°C and 15°C – still warm enough to enjoy the full range of outdoor activities that your self-catering holiday has to offer.

2018's top VIP wedding at the Costa Brava
Tesla founder Elon Musk's younger brother Kimbal Musk and Sam Wyly's celebrated their wedding at the small historical village Sant Marti d'Empúries and archaelogical site famous for it's Greco-Roman ruins near Girona, Costa Brava, Spain on Saturday June 30. Barack Obama and his family, Ruppert Murdoch, Will Smith and Salma Hayek have been part of celebrity guest list of 300 persons.
Apparently it was the groom, Kimbal Musk, who was impressed with this location on the Costa Brava during a visit in October 2017 and wanted this to be the place to celebrate his wedding. The entrepreneur and philanthropist officially married Christiana Wyly, the environmental activist daughter of billionaire Sam Wyly already on April 07 in Dallas, Texas/USA. The couple had a very small family wedding, surrounded by their siblings, children and close family.
From 17:30 hours onwards, many top luxury cars, most of them with tinted windows, began to enter the Empúries premises, making it impossible to recognise the identity of those attending the ceremony. The hotel "Hostal Empúries" on the beach of Portitxal in L'Escala, just 50 metres from the Greco-Roman archaeological site, has been reserved months in advance only for about 150 of the wedding guests, relatives and friends of the bride and the groom. Saturday afternoon, some 250 guests attended a lunch at the hotel's restaurant "Bistro del Mar" and the post-wedding brunch on Sunday ended the billionaires wedding on a High Note.
Salma Hayek, who stayed with her husband François-Henry Pinault at this hotel, have been one of the only celebrities to walk to the entrance door for wedding guests, at which moment their photo was taken.
The visit of the former US president Barack Obama to Madrid had already been announced for July 06, where he will attend the Circular Economics and Innovation Summit, but he has already begun vacations with his family in Catalonia's coastal Empordà.
Many locals and tourists from L'Escala (Girona) have been surprised to see the 'Maltese Falcon', one of the world's largest and most expensive sailboats, anchored in the bay of L'Escala. The presence of this 88 metres yacht in this privileged place on the Costa Brava this weekend is justified by the wedding of tycoon Kimbal Musk. There is every reason to believe that the couple and some of their guests have been accommodated on board.
